Areca-palm leather · Shivamogga, Karnataka
Parna Creations turns fallen areca sheaths — a by-product of the harvest — into a fully biodegradable leather. No animal hide. No PU, no PVC, no chemical tanning. Just 4–5 kg of CO₂ per square metre, against 110 for animal leather.
The numbers
Animal leather is water- and chemical-heavy. Synthetic “vegan” leather is fossil-based plastic that never breaks down. Areca leather is a third path — measured against both, on the things that matter.
| Parna areca leather | Animal leather | Polyurethane / synthetic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon emission | 4–5 kg CO₂e per m² | 110 kg CO₂e per m² | 15.9 kg CO₂e per m² |
| Water usage | 250–300 L per m² — ultra low | 23,000–25,000 L per m² — extremely high | 1,000–1,500 L per m² — moderate |
| Biodegradability | Fully degrades in under 1 year | 8–10 years to degrade | 35–40 years to degrade |
| Toxic waste | None. No harmful chemicals, no synthetic adhesive — even at volume. | Over 2 kg of toxic waste per m². The industry is a major contributor to pollution. | Variable toxic waste; petroleum-based, releasing microplastics and non-biodegradable residue. |
| Raw material | Fallen areca sheaths — renewable, already a by-product | Animal skins — non-renewable, animal cruelty | Petrochemical by-products — non-renewable |
| Durability | Crack-resistant and long lasting | Crack-resistant and long lasting | Prone to cracking and breakdown over time |

From sheath to sheet

Areca palms drop their sheaths through the year. Local self-help groups gather them — turning waste into income.

Sheaths are washed, sorted and conditioned. No tanning agents, no harsh chemistry — just water and craft.

The sheath face is layered onto a plant-based bonding layer and pressed into flexible, durable sheets.

Coloured, textured and cut to size — quality-checked for B2B rolls, D2C sheets and export orders alike.
Made in areca leather
Sold as material by the roll to brands and makers — or finished into product in our own workshop. If you can cut and stitch leather, you can work with Parna.
Own-label and white-label manufacturing available. Tell us the specification.
Hand-painted
Areca leather holds pigment the way good paper does — which makes it a genuine canvas for Indian folk art. Our Madhubani pieces are painted by hand, one at a time, and no two are identical.
